Maestro Ronald Gretz sets the scene for Gioachino Rossini’s opera, The Barber of Seville, with an engaging tour of the state of Italian opera during the first quarter of the 19th century. He discusses Rossini’s life, his early operas, their influence on his Barber of Seville, and a history of its performances. His talk also includes a trip to Empress Catherine II’s Russia, where Giovanni Paisiello wrote his masterpiece, also Il barbiere di Siviglia, which enjoyed great fame – until eclipsed by Rossini’s.
